HMD is gradually rolling out January (2018) security update for Nokia 8, 6, 5 and 3 Android smartphones. The update is being rolled out over-the-air, meaning that not all users will receive the updates today.
Nokia is one of the first Android OEM to start pushing out security updates for their phones this month. The January 2018 Security update needs to be installed on all Nokia phones as it comes with important security changes including a fix for Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities.
Nokia has once again managed to move a lot faster than other smartphone makers and rolled out the update for its phones. Size of “Update Google Security Patch 2017-09” depends on the variant and model of your Android phone. Just in case you are wondering the size of the update is less than 200 MB.
“The update for CVE-2017-13218 included in this bulletin reduces access to high-precision timers, which helps limits side channel attacks (such as CVE-2017-5715, CVE-2017-5753, and CVE-2017-5754) of all known variants of ARM processors,” the changelog reads.
HMD Global recently began rolling out Android 8 Oreo update to some of their Nokia-branded smartphones. HMD Global has promised a while ago that no devices would be left behind whenever a software update is available for download. It goes without saying that Nokia is trying to become one of the first manufacturers who care about their customers and make new software available.
